Four things you'll notice on every deck project — from the first walk-around to the final cure.

Prep that makes stain last

Pressure washing, wood brightener, sanding rough boards, sealing — the prep that lets stain actually bond. Skipping it is why finishes peel in one season.

Tigran is personally on every deck staining job in Chattanooga — residential and commercial. 20+ years and his name on the work.

Yard & landscaping protected

Plants, grass, walkways, and patio furniture covered before pressure washing or stain. Debris cleaned up daily, nothing left in your yard.

Decks we stain & paint

Every wood deck, finished with the same care.

Pressure-treated, cedar, and hardwood decks; railings, stairs, and pergolas; cleaning and coatings for composite. All by the same owner-supervised crew.

Pressure-Treated Wood Decks

Chattanooga's most common deck material. Needs 6+ months of drying after installation before staining — we'll check with a water test at the estimate.

Cedar & Hardwood Decks

Cedar, redwood, ipe, and mahogany — premium woods that take stain beautifully with penetrating oil finishes that show the grain.

Railings, Spindles & Posts

Railings, balusters, posts, and pickets — careful brush and spray work where everyone's hand rests.

Stairs & Landings

Deck stairs, treads, risers, and landings — the highest-wear surfaces on any deck, finished with extra sealing.

Pergolas & Screen Porches

Pergolas, gazebos, screen porches, and covered patios — same prep and stain system as the deck below, matched in color.

Composite Deck Cleaning

Composite (Trex, TimberTech) can't be stained, but we pressure wash, brighten, and can apply composite-specific paint coatings for a color change.

Stain or paint — which is right for your deck?

For a wood deck, stain is almost always the right choice. Paint sits on top, hides the grain, and tends to peel as boards expand and contract. Stain soaks into the wood and weathers gracefully — it fades rather than flakes. Within stain, the right transparency level depends on the wood's age and condition.

Transparent
New cedar, redwood, hardwood

Shows the full natural grain. Lasts 1–2 years in Chattanooga sun; great for showing off premium wood.

Semi-Transparent
Most decks (the default)

Adds tone while still showing the grain. Lasts 2–4 years. The right choice for most pressure-treated and cedar decks.

Solid Stain
Older or weathered wood

Hides the grain like paint, but is built to flex with the boards. Lasts 4–6 years. Best for tired decks past their natural look.

Paint
Already-painted decks only

We only paint decks that have been painted before and aren't worth stripping. Paint peels on wood that expands and contracts; we'll be honest at the estimate.

Not sure which is right for your deck? We walk it with you and recommend the transparency level that matches your wood, exposure, and how often you want to refresh it.

Common questions

Deck staining questions, answered.

Should I stain or paint my deck?
Stain is almost always the right choice for a wood deck. Stain soaks into the wood, lets the grain show, and weathers gracefully — it fades rather than peels. Paint sits on top, hides the grain, and tends to peel as boards expand and contract. We only recommend paint on decks that have already been painted and are too far gone to strip back to wood.
How long does deck staining take?
Most residential decks take 2 to 4 days, depending on size, condition, and how many coats the product needs. Day one is pressure washing and brightening; day two is sanding and surface prep; day three is stain application and sealing. Larger decks or multi-level decks can run 4 to 6 days.
Can I stain a brand-new pressure-treated deck right after installation?
No — we recommend waiting at least 6 months. Pressure-treated wood is shipped wet with preservative and needs time to dry before stain can bond. Apply stain too early and it sits on the surface instead of soaking in, then peels within a season. We do a water test at the estimate to confirm the wood is ready.
Do you stain composite or Trex decks?
Composite decks (Trex, TimberTech, and similar) can't be stained — the material doesn't absorb stain like wood. We do pressure wash and clean composite decks, and we can apply composite-specific paint coatings if you want a color change. Just tell us your decking brand at the estimate so we recommend the right product.
Can you bring an old, weathered deck back?
Usually yes. Pressure washing with wood brightener removes most grey weathering and lifts the grain. If boards are splintering or fuzzy, sanding restores a smooth surface. For decks with peeling old stain or paint, we strip the failing finish before refinishing. If there's structural rot or popped boards, we flag those so you decide on repairs before we stain.
What stain brand do you use?
Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck by default — the contractor-grade SW deck stain line, built for UV, humidity, and the freeze-thaw cycles we get in Tennessee. We carry transparent, semi-transparent, and solid options, and we help pick the right transparency level for your wood and existing condition.
How long do I need to stay off the deck after staining?
Light foot traffic is usually fine after 24 to 48 hours. Furniture, grills, and rugs should wait 72 hours or longer so the stain fully cures. We give you exact cure-time guidance based on the product we use and the weather forecast for the days after we finish.
How often will my deck need to be restained?
Semi-transparent stain typically lasts 2 to 4 years in Chattanooga's climate; solid stain lasts 4 to 6 years; transparent finishes are usually 1 to 2 years. South-facing decks fade faster than shaded ones. A light wash and refresh coat every couple of years extends the life dramatically. See how to tell it's time to restain.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — licensed, bonded & insured (TN Home Improvement Contractor License #12728, $1M General Liability), with a 2-year workmanship warranty on every deck staining project — residential and commercial.
